Whatever happened to the 9-11 newscasts that were available at this site: http://tvnews3.televisionarchive.org/tvarchive/html/about.html

Does anyone remember what I am talking about?

It is a crying shame that this site no longer exists. Enabling the viewer to see and judge the reporting done at this crucial juncture of American history is PRICELESS, and can teach us a lot about how different media reacts when the proverbial poop hits the fan. Bryant Gumbel's moronic display of nearly browbeating a nearly *hysterical *(and rightly so) witness on a cell phone repeatedly ad nauseum after the second jet struck "What makes you so sure it was intentional?" Gumbel snapped. Dorkass extraordinaire. Meanwhile, back at Fox News, a female anchor said this (or something like it) SECONDS after the second plane struck: "I think we are under attack". Hallelujah! Some of the other networks took way too long to even utter the possibility that this was terrorist related. Anybody have any thoughts on the archived material that they HAVE seen when the site WAS up? Thanks! ---Lee

I totally agree with the previous posts. The Television Archive offered on the Web the ONLY tv coverage of all major US networks plus some international ones. I tried since ever the site came down to find other sources, but to no avail. Even more, the televisionarchive.org site is now a bad URL.

If the Internet Archive does not have the technical or financial capabilities to offer and sustain this essential 911 material, it should consider transferring its files to one or several more capable institutions (i.e. Library of Congress, colleges, other wayback sites...). The last post from the admins regarding the Television Archive site dates back from almost five months and nowhere does it appears that it will be up again shortly.

Unfortunately, I'm not able to tell you when/if the Television Archive will be back up (perhaps someone else knows better than I), but rest assured, the Archive admins are aware that it's down, and have discussed it, I know for a fact.

[Sorry I can't be more helpful, but just wanted to point out that _someone_ is listening.]

It is indeed a tragedy this coverage is no longer available. This should be a permanent exhibit and should be available for everyone for years to come. As the days pass, I'm sure the traffic will be more manageable.

Please let us know what we, as members of the public, can do to help get this archive back online.

It is an invaluable document of contemporary history as well as the way the media work!

Personally, i believe it was a political move on behalf of the Archive.

If you read any of the articles and papers of the 9/11 web site you would have found a distrubing combination of terror apologies ("root causes", etc --- like it's horticulture!) and anti-americanism.

The way i see it, the last thing intellectuals and the America-haters want is people watching footage of the attacks. Hell, they might actually get mad enough to support invading a few more arab countries.

I mean, when was the last time you saw ANY 9-11 footage?

It's been 2 1/2 months since I posed the question and I have yet to recieve an official reply. I mean, the data were there. I saw it. There are even letters of praise from various organizations still posted about the good work of the archive in preserving the 9-11 broadcasts. Yet, no one will say what happened to them. I'b beginning to think it's political too and no one responsible is willing to stick their neck out and explain what happened. I'm thinking of now contacting each of the praise-givers and committee trustees for an answer.

It's a shame that this information is no longer available. To have the perspective of each news affiliate especially the international ones from that day is a very important historical artifact. To lose this content is just not right. Any updates as to what happened with the television archive site would be appreciated.

Is that it? Just the BBC and CNN? What about all the local stations in New York and Washington as well as the major network news organizations that were once archived. Even Canadian, Mexican, and some middle east stations were also archived? Did this project fail to live up to its goals due to lack of funding? In the beginning it appeared that there were quite a few heavyweights supporting this effort. What happened?

there were originally very large video archives of about twenty broadcast outlets, domestic and international. however, we were not able to adequately support those files and it simply didnt work very well so we cut it back to what we could handle. we currently are seeking funding to resurrect that and more. other potential sources for that information are the wayback machine or our daily feed of middle east news from linktv. http://www.archive.org/movies/movieslisting-browse.php?collection=independent_news&cat=Mosaic

We are sorry about having televisionarchive.org being offline at the moment. The problems is technical not political.

The history is that one vendor built the old system, and the Internet Archive took over as a pro-bono host for it, but could nto support the old software. The Internet Archive is in the midst of redoing its website architecture (to be less db oriented and more xml oriented).

When this is showing signs of life, then the site will be revived.

So, again, we apologize.

Thanks. But when will that resumption be? It's been over a year (maybe two) already. Are these telecasts available anywhere else since it doesn't seem to be a priority at archive.org?

This was a great resource (aside from the server problems) and I think archive.org should make it a priority to bring it back. If you have any clout with decision makers there, perhaps you could argue for a quick and simple solution. There's really no need for a big webby treatment of the video files. Just a directory listing with meaningful file names like 9-11_CBS_830-900_hres.mov would be fine. If archive.org insists on a fancy interface, maybe this simple directory listing approach can be made available while work proceeds. It would take the typical webmaster about an hour to set up.

It's been 3 months since your reply; have there been any updates on the Television Archive? I think, as the rest of the people seem to feel, that this is a site that is worthwhile to have up.

Isn't there any way to access the television archive files of 9/11?
I'm working on an essay about that day, I'm going to discribe the way the media worldwide reacted to those attacks. I just can't find any full breaking news reports from that day!
I hope you can help me, I've been looking for almost a whole year!!!

I am also interested in seeing international news coverage of 9/11 from www.televisionarchive.org. It says "Sorry, but the Television Archive 911 collection is currently down." When will it be up again?

I know what you're talking about. They had archival news footage from 9/11 (while it was actually unfolding), culled from major and minor TV outlets around the world. They had it broken down in 30 minute increments so that you could compare and contrast the coverage at any given moment.

It's too bad it's gone. It was sort of horrific to see that stuff again, but fascinating all the same.
